Characteristics

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate, often 3–5-lobed, toothed, 5–7-nerved from the base; stipules deciduous or persistent. Flowers hermaphrodite in 1–3-flowered cymes arranged in terminal or axillary inflorescences; bracts conspicuous, unequal, soon deciduous. Sepals 4–5, free, with a rounded horn at apex, glandular. Petals 4–5, sometimes clawed. Androecium with numerous very short outer sterile stamens and 8–16 or many fertile, the outer shorter than the inner; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary oblong, 4–8-locular with numerous ovules in 2 rows in each locule; style cylindric with 4–8 linear stigmas.
