Leaves opposite, petiolate; lamina 1.2–17.5(21.4) × 0.8–9(11.5) cm, narrowly-to broadly-elliptic, oblong-elliptic, oblong or ovate, acuminate at the apex, the acumen acute or obtuse, rounded or somewhat cuneate at the base, coriaceous or membranous, bullate or flat, with the venation ± impressed above and ± raised beneath, usually ± glabrous on both surfaces or sparsely hairy only on the venation beneath or sometimes ± pubescent on both faces to velvety beneath; petiole puberulous to pubescent, somewhat thick or ± slender.
Calyx green, pink, purple or maroon; tube c. 3 mm long, not very constricted above the ovary; lobes erect or slightly spreading, acute to ± obtuse, somewhat thick (not membranous), with the venation usually obscure, glabrous or minutely puberulous, shortly and obscurely ciliate, sometimes glandular-punctate on the back.
Stems puberulous or pubescent when young, usually glabrous or glabrescent with age; stems and branches usually with stout straight or hook-like persistent petiole bases up to 3.5 cm long.
Inflorescences capitate, subglobose or ovoid, few-flowered and lax or many-flowered and compact; bracts linear to elliptic.
Corolla white or whitish, scented; tube glabrous on the outside or with sessile glands and/or gland-tipped hairs.
Style and stamens ± exserted; anthers crimson.
A scandent or erect shrub up to 6 m high.
Fruit black on drying, 4-lobed.
