Erect single-stemmed or shrubby herb or climber from a woody rootstock, 0.3–5 m. long or tall; stems brown with dense pubescence, eventually ± glabrescent.. Leaves opposite, oblong-ovate, 3.3–18 cm. long, 1.5–11 cm. wide, shortly acutely acuminate at the apex, truncate to slightly or distinctly cordate at the base, ± discolorous, slightly hairy on venation above and shortly pubescent beneath, mainly on the raised venation and minutely punctate.. Inflorescences terminal and from subtending axils, together up to 10 cm. wide; axes shortly spreading pubescent; pedicels ± 7 mm. long.. Calyx becoming plum-coloured or maroon, shortly pubescent; tube funnel-shaped, 5 mm. long; lobes pinkish, lanceolate to triangular, 3–7 mm. long, acute..
