Characteristics

Twining or less often ± erect shrub (even once described as a tree by a reliable collector in W. Africa) 1–4.5 m. long or tall; stems brown, terete, ridged, glabrous, climbing by means of persistent petiole-bases, these sometimes widened at the apex.. Leaves ± oblong, 1.5–15.5 cm. long, 0.6–6 cm. wide, long-acuminate at the apex, rounded to ± cuneate at the base, entire or very coarsely crenate or undulate at the apex, not drying black, glabrous; petiole 0.3–2(–3) cm. long.. Inflorescences terminal on lateral branches and probably main branches as well, corymbose, including 2 laterals from first 2 leafy nodes, 6–9(–12) cm. long, 7–10.5 cm. wide; axes very slender, very finely pubescent with short curled hairs; peduncles and secondary axes 0.5–7.5 cm. long; pedicels 0.2–1.5 cm. long; bracts linear to lanceolate, 3–10 mm. long.. Calyx-tube subovoid, 2 mm. long, the limb whitish yellow or green, ± funnel-shaped or rather flat, spreading, 5–7 mm. wide, divided into broadly triangular teeth, 1–2 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, glabrous..
