Characteristics

Epiphytic shrubs, perhaps dioecious. Leaves elliptical, mostly acuminate, drying discolorous, the lateral veins slightly arcuate, anastomosing to form a submarginal vein; petioles short. Inflorescences short, strict or basally branched, the peduncles with successive pairs of scale-like bracts. Flowers with 5 sepals, imbricate; petals 5, rotund, quincuncial, rotund, greatly exceeding the sepals; stamens wanting in pistillate flowers, the androecium consisting of a fleshy mass with numerous partly fused staminodes at the periphery, the ovary 4-5-locular, the ovules numerous, staminate flowers unknown. Fruit a small berry.
