A shrub or tree. It grows 2-8 m tall. The young branches are square in cross section. The bark can be red brown. The leaf blades are yellowish-green and 5-11 cm long by 1-4 cm wide. They are narrowly oval. They are wedge shaped at the base. They are leathery and shiny above. The flower cluster is at the top of the plant. The flowers have a strong scent. They are yellowish-green. The fruit is 4-5 mm across and has one seed.
Inflorescences terminal, sessile or with a peduncle up to 0.8 cm long, ± congested, sometimes with additional pairs of inflorescences arising from the node below; primary inflorescence branches 0.3–2 cm long, glabrous to pubescent; pedicels 0.3(6) mm long; bracteoles usually present at the base of the calyx tube, inconspicuous, scale-like to triangular or subulate, usually ciliate.
Corolla whitish or yellowish-green; tube narrowly funnel-shaped to cylindrical, 4–5 mm long, glabrous outside, sparsely pubescent at throat within; lobes 4–6 × 1–1.75 mm, ± oblong, rounded.
Calyx tube (0.5)0.75–1 mm long, glabrous; limb often drying brownish or greenish in contrast to tube, divided nearly to base into rounded lobes, ciliate.
Seed blackish, 3.5–4.5 mm in diameter, spherical, finely reticulate; hilar cavity basal, small, somewhat irregular; endosperm somewhat ruminate.
Shrub or tree 1.8–7(9) m tall, glabrous; young branches ± square in section, with grey or sometimes red-brown bark.
Placenta c. 1/3 the size of the ovules or sometimes equalling them; ovules 2(3), pendulous.
Fruit black when dry, 5–7 mm in diameter, globose, 1-seeded; calyx limb persistent.
Flowers said to be strongly scented.
