Characteristics

Inflorescence terminal on main and leafy lateral branches, sometimes on very short leafless spurs off the main and lateral branches or sometimes axillary, usually congested, less often very lax; flowers sessile or pedicellate; bracteoles usually present; bractlets occasionally present.

Calyx limb with both limb-tube and lobes apparent (TAB. 73/A1), less often limb-tube very reduced (TAB. 73/A3), or with limb-tube well developed, repand or bearing short teeth (TAB. 73/A2); lobes various, very occasionally overlapping.
Seeds 1(2) per fruit, dark brown or blackish, reticulate, ± spherical (or sometimes hemispherical) with an irregular or less often circular hilar activity; endosperm fully or partly ruminate or ± entire (not in Flora Zambesiaca area).
Stipule limbs not darkening at centre (sometimes dark all over when dry), variously shaped, sometimes apiculate, rarely aristate, very often caducous.
Corolla glabrous outside; tube slightly shorter or slightly longer than lobes, sparsely to densely pubescent at throat.
Leaves coriaceous or less often subcoriaceous, infrequently chartaceous, fully mature at time of flowering or not.
Placenta small to moderately large, bearing 2–8 pendulous ovules, or ovate with (1)2–3(6) impressed ovules.
Fruit brown or red, drying blackish, 1(2)-locular.
