Characteristics

Arbor circiter 8 m. alta. Rami ex internodiis 2-6 cm. longis compositi, novelli complanati, glabri, vetustiores subteretes, cortice griseo opaco vestiti. Folia opposita, petiolo angustissime alato 1-1.5 cm. longo instructa; lamina ovato-oblonga, apicem versus contracta, apice ipso tamen obtusa et ibidem callosa, basi acuta, margine incrassato haud revoluta, glaberrima, supra nitida, subtus subopaca, siccitate haud conspicue discolor, supra olivacea costa nervisque albidis ornata, subtus dilute viridis, costa subtus prominula, nervis utroque latere costae plerumque 6, pluribus axillis acarodomatiis ore pilosis instructa, reticulatione densa subtus conspicua. Stipulae oblongae, 6-9 mm. longae et 3 mm. latae, subacutae, carinatae, extra intusque glabrae, mox deciduae. Inflorescentiae pedunculo 5-5.5 cm. longo elatae, multiflorae; ramuli primarii axi paulo longiores, foliis magnitudine redactis instructi, alii bracteis triangularibus vel subulatis usque ad 2.5 mm. longis suffulti, omnes glabri, ultimi verruculosi. Flores bracteolis subulatis 1 mm. longis instructi, flos medianus cuiusque triadis sessilis, laterales pedicello vix 1 mm. longo elati. Ovarium ovoideum, 0.8 mm. altum, biloculare, utroque loculo plerumque ovulis 2, raro 3 vel 1 munito. Calyx fere ad basin in lobos 5 ovario subaequilongos partitus; lobi oblongi, subacuti, apice callosi. Corolla extra glabra, tubo 3 mm. longo et 1 mm. diametro intus dimidio superiore breviter piloso, lobis ovato-oblongis obtusis 3 mm. longis et 1.5 mm. latis intus glabris. Stamina filamentis glabris 0.7 mm. longis, antheris corollae lobis subaequilongis. Discus annularis, humilis, glaber. Stylus corolla paulo longior, sub receptaculo pollinis hirtellus; receptaculum pollinis antheris paulo brevius; stigmata tota cohaerentia. Drupa globosa, 6 mm. diametro, monosperma; semen globosum, 3 mm. diametro, brunneum, hilo parvo et ruminatione pro genere typicis.

Leaf blades 5.5–13 × 1.8–8 cm, ovate or occasionally narrowly ovate, subacuminate to acuminate at apex, cuneate or sometimes rounded then equally or unequally tapering at base, coriaceous, dark green and shiny above, paler beneath; lateral nerves in c. 6 main pairs; tertiary nerves raised above; domatia present as small tufts of hair; petiole 1–2.5 cm long; stipules greenish or light brown when dry, 0.7–12 mm long, ovate-oblong to ovate, acute, with a midrib apparent, caducous usually only present at apex.

Large shrub or tree, up to 10 m high. Leaves distinctly petiolate, 12-25 mm long. Domatia conspicuous; leaf blades acute to acuminate at apex. Inflorescence terminal, frequently with additional pairs of axillary inflorescences arising from next 1 or 2 (or 3) nodes down. Flowers cream or white.
Corolla whitish; tube narrowly funnel-shaped, 3.3–4 mm long, glabrous outside, sparsely hairy inside; lobes 2.75–3 × 1.5–2 mm, rounded.
Seed blackish-brown, spherical, 3–4 mm in diameter, finely reticulate; hilar cavity small, irregular; endosperm deeply ruminate.
Small tree 3–8(12) m tall, glabrous; young branches square in section, covered with buff to pale grey bark.
Calyx tube 0.75–1 mm long; limb up to c. 1 mm long, divided almost to base into rounded teeth.
Fruit black when dry, 6–7 mm in diameter, spherical, 1-seeded; calyx limb persistent.
Placenta small, bearing 2–3 pendulous ovules.
