Characteristics

Male flowers with calyx 13–14 mm. long, tubular-infundibuliform, prominently nerved, minutely tawny-tomentose outside, sparsely pubescent inside, with 3–6 triangular teeth 1.5–2.5 mm. long; corolla sordid with tube 15–17 mm. long, cylindrical, glandular-puberulous outside, glabrous inside save by some whitish long hairs below the insertion of stamens, limb 15–20 mm. in diam. with (4)5(6) oblanceolate, outspread lobes; stamens inserted near the apex of the corolla tube, filaments 6–8 mm. long, slender, hairy to the base, anthers 2.5–4.0 mm. long, oblong; ovary vestigial, without style.

Leaves alternate; petiole 0.5–3.0(5.0) cm. long, subterete, tawny-pubescent or tawny-hairy; lamina 4–13(16) x 3.5–10.0( 12.5) cm. very variable in shape, widely ovate or widely obovate to reniform, roughish but glandular-pubescent when young above, tomentose below, usually rounded at apex, obtuse to subcordate at base, margins entire, slightly crenate to minutely dentate, leathery, with 3–4 secondary nerves on each side of the midrib, the basal ones reaching the margins on the upper half, or 3–5-nerved from base, very prominently net-veined below.
Female flowers with calyx 9–11 mm. long, besides as in male flowers; corolla with tube c. 12 mm. long, besides as in male flowers; staminodes with filaments 2.5–3.5 mm. long and sterile anthers 2.0 mm. long; ovary c. 1.5 mm. long, ovoid, glabrous; style 18–22 mm. long, first branched at c. 11 mm. from the base and with stigmatic branches 6–10 mm. long, linear-filiform, glabrous.
Fruit c. 40 x 35 mm., ovoid, with a horn-shaped point c. 15 mm. long, glabrous; fruiting calyx widely campanulate, enlarged up to 35 mm. wide at the mouth, with crisp and revolute margin, pubescent or tomentellous outside, very prominently nerved outside mainly on the upper half; mesocarp fibrous; pyrene coarsely trapezoidal in cross section, 1-seeded.
Small tree or shrub, up to 7 m high. Lower surface of leaves tomentose; margins entire, slightly crenate to minutely dentate. Inflorescence minutely tomentose. Fruit up to 40 x 35 mm, with horn-shaped point; fruiting calyx up to 35 mm wide at mouth, very prominently nerved. Flowers white.
Multiple-stemmed shrub or small tree up to 7 m. high, dioecious, deciduous; branches tomentose, glabrescent and with prominent leaf-scars.
Cymes arranged in short ± contracted terminal panicles; rhachis and branches minutely tawny-tomentose; pedicels 2–11 mm. long.
