Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 3 m., or sometimes a liane; branches densely pubescent with short adpressed or ± spreading greyish hairs, later glabrous, usually with distinctly nodular petiole-bases.. Leaf-blades oblong, obovate, elliptic or ± round, 1.5–9.5 cm. long, 1–8 cm. wide, shortly acuminate or rounded with short mucro at the apex, rounded, truncate or sometimes subcordate at the base, discolorous, subcoriaceous, entire or obscurely crenate to remotely dentate, particularly near the apex or with short subulate emergences (?hydathodes), with scattered white setae above and more densely setulose-pubescent beneath or in W. Africa sometimes densely pubescent on both surfaces, sometimes ± shiny above with venation impressed; petiole mostly 1–2.5 cm. long.. Flowers opening at night, scented, in rather short dense pubescent cymes up to 9 cm. wide; peduncles 2–4.5(–7) cm. long; secondary axes ± 1(–3) cm. long; pedicels very short or obsolete, Buds with calyx strongly constricted at the apex, sometimes with recurved subulate lobes at tip.. Calyx-tube tubular, becoming cupular in fruit, 4–6.5 mm. long, obscurely ribbed, grey-pubescent outside, silky inside, with ovate or deltoid lobes ± 0.8–2 mm. long, the true setaceous lobes having ± fallen.. Corolla creamy yellow; tube urceolate-tubular or cylindrical to narrowly funnel-shaped, 4–7 mm. long; lobes oblong, 3–4 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, obtuse, ± spreading.. Hermaphrodite: stamens not much exserted from the tube; ovary glabrous, tapering into the 4 mm. long style; style branches 2 mm. long; stigmas 7.5 mm. long.. Male: filaments 3.5 mm. long, reaching tips of corolla-lobes, the anthers extending beyond; ovary rudimentary and style lacking..
