Characteristics

Shrub to 3 m.; stems ± straw-coloured, ridged when dry; very young parts with long ± adpressed hairs and pale brownish tomentum of shorter hairs, later ± glabrous save for very scattered long hairs.. Leaves dark green, drying blackish green; blades ovate to broadly elliptic, 1.5–7.5 cm. long, 1–6 cm. wide, subentire to irregularly coarsely dentate-crenate, smooth to the touch above but actually with minute conical tubercles and cystolith groups, with a few long white hairs on the midrib beneath; petiole drying blackish, (2.2–)3–5 cm. long.. Cymes dense, terminal or axillary, 1–1.5 cm. long and wide, densely pubescent; peduncle 1–7 mm. long; pedicels 1–2 cm. long, tomentose.. Buds obovate, 6.5 mm. long, hairy at apex.. Male flowers: calyx 7–8 mm. long, narrowed near the base, 3–4-lobed; corolla cream; tube very narrowly funnel-shaped, 9 mm. long; lobes 5–6, ovate-oblong, 4–6 mm. long, 3.5 mm. wide; stamens 5–6, with filaments 2.5–3 mm. long and anthers 3 mm. long; rudimentary ovary and style under 2 mm. long.. Female flowers similar.. Fruit orange, ovoid, 1.5–1.8 cm. long, 1–1.1 cm. wide; calycine cup 1.1–1.2 cm. wide, obscurely toothed.
