Characteristics

Shrubs or small trees, often white-hairy in parts and with T-shaped hairs. Leaves alternate, simple, entire, few-toothed or dentate; stipules absent. Inflorescence axillary or terminal, paniculate, racemose, fasciculate or flowers solitary. Flowers small, actinomorphic, bisexual, 4–6-merous (can vary on the same plant where occasional flowers may have more of fewer petals). Sepals 4 or 5 (or 6), valvate, fused in lower half or rarely free. Petals 4 or 5 (or 6), free or rarely fused, valvate, with a small scale at base. Stamens same number as petals; filaments free; anthers 2-locular, dehiscing by longitudinal slits. Disc present. Ovary inferior, 1-or 2 (–4)-locular; ovule 1 per locule. Fruit a drupe, with persistent sepals, usually 1-locular, 1-seeded.

Fls small, 5-merous, bright yellow, in axillary or terminal panicles, racemes, fascicles, or solitary. Receptacle turbinate; calyx-segs valvate. Petals valvate, with small scale at base. Stamens 5. Ovary 1-2-celled, stigma 2-lobed. Drupe ovoid to broad-oblong in outline, crowned by persistent sepals. Shrubs with alt. lvs; young branchlets, petioles, lvs below, peduncles and pedicels densely clad in appressed silvery-white tomentum. Genus endemic to N.Z.

Usage

Several species, including Corokia cotoneaster (Wire-netting Bush), C. buddlejoides (Korokio) and cultivars of the hybrid C. ×virgata are grown as ornamental shrubs (Rodd 1996: 160–161, Spencer 2002: 39, Heywood 2007: 44).
