Characteristics

Herb 30–200 cm tall, erect or sometimes straggling.. Stems sometimes purplish, pubescent to glabrous.. Leaves sessile, occasionally reddish, linear-lanceolate, lanceolate, elliptic or oblanceolate, 4–19 cm long, 0.4–0.7(–2.5) cm wide, cuneate-attenuate into a winged petioloid or non-petioloid exauriculate or usually auriculate base, margins remotely shallowly sinuate-denticulate to coarsely sinuate-dentate or sinuate-serrate, often with ± recurving teeth, apex obtuse to acute, sometimes attenuate, glabrous or densely to thinly pubescent, often ± glabrescent.. Capitula 1–10 in congested to lax terminal corymbs, discoid; stalks of the individual capitula pubescent; involucre cylindrical, 6.5–12 mm long, 2.5–5 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 7–16, lanceolate, 1.5–5 mm long, glabrous or ciliate, dark-tipped; phyllaries 13–21, usually 13, green, 6–11 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent.. Ray florets 0; disc florets yellow, rarely orange, corolla 7–9.5 mm long, tube glabrous, gradually expanded above the middle, lobes 0.7–1.5 mm long.. Achenes 1.5–1.7 mm long, ribbed, shortly hairy between the ribs; pappus 6–10.5 mm long.
