A straggling, weak-stemmed, thinly hairy, often glandular, perennial herb, stems simple or sparingly branched, up to c. 1 m tall, leafy. Leaves alternate, up to 12 x 3 cm, narrowly to broadly lanceolate, sessile, auriculate-amplexicaul, sometimes narrowed to a petiole-like base, simple or occasionally lobate, margins coarsely toothed. Heads about 1.5 cm long, solitary on long bracteate peduncles, terminal or in the uppermost leaf axils. Involucral bracts c. 20, a little shorter than the flowers, more or less hairy. Flowers bright golden yellow. Achenes c. 2 mm long, narrowly cylindric, dark with closely set white ribs, white hispid between the ribs. Pappus of copious white silky hairs, many time longer than the achene, deciduous.
