Characteristics

Much branched shrub or bushy woody herb, up to 2–5 m. tall in Africa, smaller elsewhere.. Branches tomentose, with tawny mostly spreading hairs or elsewhere subappressed pubescent.. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets oblanceolate-elliptic or narrowly elliptic to obovate-oblong, up to 30–75 mm. long, 15–27 mm. wide, subglabrous to pilose above, though often ultimately glabrescent, rather densely appressed pilose beneath; petioles up to 8–28 mm. long.. Stipules subulate, up to 1 mm. long, or obscure.. Racemes up to 5–10 cm. long, with a number of flowers rather closely arranged at least towards the top; bracts shortly caudate-lanceolate, 1–3 mm. long; bracteoles inserted on the upper part of the pedicel, linear or linear-lanceolate, up to 1·5 mm. long.. Calyx abruptly contracted at the base, (3–)3·5–5 mm. long, densely appressed pubescent; lobes narrowly triangular, usually a little shorter than the tube.. Standard broadly elliptic or suborbicular, yellow, glabrous outside; wings ± as long as or a little shorter than the keel; keel rounded about the middle (except in Asia), with an incurved untwisted beak, 9–11 mm. long in Africa, smaller elsewhere.. Pod subglobose-ellipsoid, abruptly contracted into the 2–3 mm. long stipe, 10–11 mm. long and 5–7 mm. across (smaller elsewhere), brownish tomentose or, elsewhere, appressed pubescent, 2-seeded; style very persistent.. Seeds oblique-cordiform, ± 4 mm. long, smooth, light brown.
