Characteristics

Caudex massive, suberect; stipe to 75 cm long, stramineous except at base; basal scales 15x1 mm, medium to dark brown, firm, flat; scales above base 5-6 mm long, stiffly spreading with inrolled edges and widened clathrate base; lamina to 50 cm or more long, thin; pinnae at least 10 pairs, basal ones 22-30 cm long bearing 5 pairs of free or adnate pinnules; basal basiscopic pinnules 10 cm long with 1 pair of free deeply crenate tertiary leaflets; basal acroscopic pinnules 4 cm long; second pair of pinnae 22 cm long, their largest pinnules 6 × 1.7 cm with basal lobes crenate, costules of the lobes 4 mm apart, several middle pinnules with much-decurrent basal lobes; upper pinnae with decurrent basal lobes the costules of which arise from the rachis; scales of lower surface of pinna-rachis 2-4 mm long, their edges inrolled, many cells near their bases clathrate; hairs on upper surface of pinna-rachis 0.5 mm long; sori on the middle of veins in pinnule-lobes; indusia small, thin, gland-bearing.
More
Rhizomes erect or suberect; rhizome scales brown, narrowly lanceolate to linear-subulate, 1.5-2 mm. Stipe stramineous, 40-70 cm; stipe scales spreading, reddish brown, subulate, 6-8 mm; scales on rachises and costae similar but smaller. Lamina 3-pinnate or 4-pinnate-pinnatifid, triangular-lanceolate, 60-80 × 30-50 cm; pinnae 12-18 pairs; basal pinnae largest, triangular-lanceolate, 20-30 × 15-25 cm; pinnules 10-13 pairs; basal basiscopic pinnules of basal pinnae longest, 10-20 × 3-6 cm; bases of upper pinnae or lobes decurrent with veinlets arising from rachis. Lamina herbaceous to thinly papery; veins free, distinct, no veinlets arising from costae except a few in distal part of costae. Sori medial or submedial, indusiate, indusia usually persistent. Perispore coarsely folded or tuberculate.
