Genus

Pteridophytes > Polypodiales > Dryopteridaceae > Dryopteridoideae

Characteristics

Caudex short, erect or suberect or rarely prostrate, its apex and the bases of stipes densely covered with thin flat scales which are not more than 1 mm wide at their bases, stipes scaly throughout, with a ± abrupt change from the long basal scales to shorter ones of two different types, distinctive for each species; lamina always bipinnate at the base, the basiscopic pinnules of basal pinnae always longer than the acroscopic ones, the basal ones usually longest and very deeply lobed, in some species pinnate to bipinnate near their bases; distal pinnae or pinnules ± adnate to the rachis and ± decurrent at their bases but their basal basiscopic veins almost always arising from the pinna-or pinnule-midrib; texture of lamina mostly thin with veins distinct on both sides but in some species opaque with the smaller veins indistinct; veins all free, those in each pinna-lobe all arising from the costule of the lobe (not from the costa of the pinna); lower surface of pinna-rachis or pinna-midrib always bearing scales which are progressively smaller distally, similar scales also present on costae of pinnules, some ctenitoid hairs also present and often appressed cylindric unicellular glands, such glands also often present between veins, sometimes with the addition of short hairs of various kinds; upper surface of pinna-rachis or pinna-midrib and of costae of pinnules prominent, always covered with ctenitoid hairs which are thicker than those on the lower surface, similar hairs scattered on veins but not between veins where appressed cylindric glands or short non-ctenitoid hairs may occur; sori usually medial on the veins, not terminal; indusia usually present, sometimes very small and hidden by the mature sporangia, always unpigmented, thin and fragile, usually bearing marginal cylindric glands when young; spores of two distinct kinds.
More
Plants terrestrial, 10-140 cm tall. Rhizome short, erect to ascending, densely scaly at apex and at stipe bases. Fronds clustered; stipe dark brown to stramineous, scaly throughout; scales of two different types: (1) lanceolate, membranous, appressed, and iridescent scales, and (2) subulate, stiff, spreading scales without obvious iridescence. Lamina oblong-lanceolate to ovate-triangular, broadest at base, 1-4-pinnate; basal pair of pinnae always largest, triangular or broadly lanceolate, basal basiscopic pinnules of basal pinnae usually much enlarged; distal pinnae or pinnules ± adnate to rachis or costae and ± decurrent at their bases; veins all free, veinlets on ultimate pinnules or lobes simple or (rarely) bifurcate to pinnate; lamina texture herbaceous or papery, rarely leathery, with ctenitoid hairs on adaxial surface and short glandular hairs on abaxial surface, or rarely glabrous; costae of pinnules prominent, always covered with ctenitoid (multicellular) hairs. Sori medial or rarely submarginal; indusia present or not, sometimes very small and hidden by maturing sporangia. Perispore echinate, coarsely folded, or tuberculate. x = 41.
Plants generally terrestrial. Stems erect to obliquely ascending, stolons absent. Leaves monomorphic, evergreen or dying back in winter. Petiole 2/3 to equaling length of blade, base not swollen; vascular bundles more than 3, arranged in an arc, ± round in cross section. Blade lanceolate to deltate, 1--4-pinnate-pinnatifid, gradually reduced distally to confluent, pinnatifid apex, herbaceous. Pinnae not articulate to rachis, segment margins nearly entire to crenulate, ciliate; proximal pinnae not reduced, sometimes basal pair much the longest, sessile to petiolulate, equilateral or inequilateral with basiscopic side more developed (pinnules noticeably longer); costae adaxially rounded or flat, not grooved; indument of linear to lanceolate scales and often multicellular glandular hairs abaxially, of multicellular reddish hairs adaxially. Veins free, simple or forked. Sori in 1 row between midrib and margin, round; indusia round-reniform, attached at narrow sinus, sometimes small or seemingly absent, persistent or caducous. Spores brownish, usually spiny, sometimes prominently cristate, rarely finely reticulate. x = 41.
Sori dorsal on veins; indusium round-reniform, sts absent, sporangia stalked; annulus incomplete, vertical. Spores bilateral, echinulate. Rhizome short, erect, or creeping, paleate; stipes paleate. Lamina bipinnate to decompound, catadromic; hairs pluricellular, constricted between cells. Terrestrial ferns of about 150 widely distributed spp.
Fronds usually much longer than wide; basiscopic margin of lamina-lobes not thickened.
