Erect woody perennial 0.5–1.5 m. tall.. Stems usually bright reddish purple, puberulous to densely glandular pubescent or villous, somewhat viscid.. Leaves narrowly elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, 0.5–12(–16) cm. long, 0.8–3 cm. wide, acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous to shortly pubescent.. Pedicels axillary, extra-axillary or interpetiolar, 0.3–1.1 cm. long, bracteolate.. Calyx yellow-green, vermilion at base, later vermilion all over, ± 3 cm. long, 7 mm. wide, with distinct basal swelling, puberulous to densely glandular-pubescent, villous or hispid; lobes very short, alternating with setose sinus-horns.. Petals white or yellowish, vestigial.. Stamens long-exserted.. Disc excentric.. Ovary saccate near apex. Style exserted 1–1.5 cm.. Capsule many-seeded.
