Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Cymbopogon

Characteristics

Tufted perennial, 0.3-1.0 m high; fresh shoots aromatic. Leaf blade often folded, appearing setaceous, mostly confined to base, margins scabrid; ligule an unfringed membrane, 0.5-1.5 mm long. Inflorescence reddish, of paired, short racemes, ± enclosed by spatheoles, these crowded into a large, complex, leafy, false panicle; raceme bases subequal; lowermost raceme and internode of raceme filiform and not fused together; internode and pedicel pilose, long-hairy on sides only; spikelets paired: one sessile, the other pedicelled; callus tip inserted into apex of internode and not visible. Sessile spikelets 4.5-7.0 mm long; lower glume 2-4-nerved, wingless or with a narrow wing, usually deeply concave on back. Florets 2; lower floret sterile, reduced to a lemma, hyaline, 1-nerved, awnless; upper floret bisexual, lemma awn 14-20 mm long, glabrous. Pedicellate spikelets 5.5-6.5 mm long, lower glume wingless; anther 3.8-4.2 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-May.

Perennial. Culms densely tufted, wiry, erect or geniculate, 60–100 cm tall. Leaf sheaths glabrous; leaf blades narrow, folded or involute, glaucous, 15–30 × 0.2–0.3 cm, glabrous, scabrid, apex filiform; ligule ca. 1–2 mm. Spathate panicle open, 15–25 cm, raceme pairs few; spatheoles 2–3 cm; racemes 1.5–2 cm; rachis internodes and pedicels ciliate on margins, glabrous on back; pedicel of homogamous pair not swollen, oblong, free from adjacent internode. Sessile spikelet narrowly lanceolate-oblong, 4.5–6 mm; lower glume papery, concave or almost flat below middle, keels rounded below middle, sharp and scabrid above, wingless or almost so, 3–5-veined between keels above middle; upper lemma 2-lobed; awn 1.4–1.8 cm. Pedicelled spikelet 4.5–6 mm. Fl. and fr. Jul–Dec. 2n = 20, 40.
Tufted perennial, the basal sheaths persistent and thinly pubescent; culms 40–100 cm. high.. Leaf-blades flat, 15–30 cm. long, 1–4 mm. wide, smooth or asperulous.. False panicle linear to narrowly oblong, 10–30 cm. long; racemes 15–35 mm. long, ciliate with hairs up to 3 mm. long, the upper with 5–7(–8) pairs of spikelets, the lowest pedicel oblong, not swollen, free from the adjacent internode.. Sessile spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 4.5–7 mm. long; lower glume chartaceous, nerveless or with 1–3 short nerves near the tip and concave between the keels, these rounded in the lower half, wingless; upper lemma bifid to near the middle, the awn 10–20 mm. long, geniculate, with a distinct column.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 4–7 mm. long.
Tufted perennial 300-1 000 mm high; leaves mainly basal. Leaf blade (120)150-300 x 2-5 mm, usually folded, appearing setaceous, parallel-sided at base, margins scabrid; ligule an unfringed membrane, 0.5-1.5 mm long. Inflorescence reddish; lowermost raceme internode and pedicel filiform, not fused together; internode and pedicel hairy. Sessile spikelet 4-7 mm long; lower glume with a broad median groove, wingless or narrowly winged above, 2-4-nerved; upper lemma bifid to ± middle, awn 10-20 mm long; anthers 1.6-4.0 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet 4.5-7.5 mm long, lower glume wingless.
Perennial, up to 1 m tall; fresh shoots aromatic. Leaves linear, usually folded and thin, 2-4 mm wide. Inflorescence a complex leafy panicle, racemes paired, short, (10-)15-20(-28) mm long, rhachis and pedicels with long hairs on margins only; spikelets paired in a sessile and pedicellate combination of dissimilar spikelets. Sessile spikelet 5-6 mm long, lower glume deeply concave, wingless or very narrowly winged; lemma awn 10-16 mm long, glabrous.
Perennial; up to 1 m high; tufted. Culms lowest node clothed by leaf sheaths. Leaf blades 150-300 x 2-4 mm; parallel-sided at base; often folded and appearing setaceous. Flowers: in a complex; false panicle; lower raceme base not swollen; sessile spikelets 5-6 mm long; pedicellate spikelets slightly shorter; lower glume of sessile spikelets deeply concave; usually wingless or with a narrow wing 0.1-0.3 mm wide.
Sessile spikelet 4–7 mm long; inferior glume with a broad U-shaped median groove and scabrid flanges in the upper 1/4, entire at the apex; superior lemma linear, bifid to about the middle; awn 10–16 mm long, with well developed column; anthers 1.6–3(4) mm long, straw-coloured.
Perennial, tufted, up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 150-300 mm long, 2-4 mm wide (often folded and appearing setaceous). Spikelets (sessile) 5-6 mm long (pedicellate slightly shorter); lower glume of sessile spikelets deeply concave, usually wingless or with a narrow wing.
Leaves pilose with a few long hairs near the ligule only, often tinged with red; ligule 0.5–1.5 mm long; laminas 12–21 cm long, 4–5 mm wide, broadest at about the middle, switch-like, scabrid on the margins, very gradually tapering at the apex to a thread-like point.
Perennial to 1 m. Leaves linear, usually folded, 2-4 mm wide. Spikelets as in C. marginatus but lower glume of sessile spikelets deeply concave, wingless.
Racemes 10–28 mm long, tinged with red; internodes and pedicels pilose with silvery-white hairs.
Inflorescence 17–38 cm long, elongated and ± interrupted, reddish.
