Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Cynodon

Characteristics

Rhizomes usually absent. Culms erect, c. 1 mm wide, herbaceous; flowering culms 9–22 (–40) cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous, pilose, or hirsute; orifice bearded; ligule a laciniate membrane, 0.5–1 mm long; blade flat, 2–5.5 cm long, 1–3 mm wide, acuminate, dull pale green or dull dark green, often glaucous. Inflorescences digitate; branches 3–5, 1.5–4 cm long, moderately rigid. Spikelets disarticulating above or between the glumes; rachilla not prolonged. Glumes unequal in length, with the lower narrower than the upper, lanceolate to ovate; lower glume less than half as long as basal lemma, 0.6–1 mm long; upper glume ±half as long as basal lemma, 1.2–1.5 mm long. Basal lemma (2.1–) 2.5–3 mm long; keel narrowly winged; hairs extending the length of the lemma. Anthers 1.5–2 mm long, orange.
More
Perennial, 50-300 mm high; stoloniferous. Leaf blade glabrous or sparsely hairy; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence digitate or subdigitate, of 3(-6) secund racemes; rachis flattened. Spikelets 2.5-3.0 mm long, narrowly ovate, strongly laterally compressed; glumes less than 1/2 as long as spikelet. Floret 1, bisexual, rachilla not produced; lemma keel winged, rigidly pubescent; palea glabrous, keel scabrid; anther 1.6-2.0 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-May.
Perennial 50-300 mm high; stoloniferous. Leaf blade 30-60 x 2-3 mm, glabrous or sparsely hairy; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence of 3-6, but usually 3 racemes. Spikelet 2.5-3.0 mm long, narrowly ovate; rachilla not produced; glumes less than 1/2 as long as spikelet; lemma keel winged, rigidly pubescent; palea keels scabrid and glabrous; anther 1.6-2.0 mm long.
Perennial; up to 0.3 m high; stoloniferous. Leaf blades 30-60 x 2-3 mm; glabrous or sparsely hairy. Flowers: inflorescence digitate; spikelets 2.5-3.0 mm long; narrowly ovate; glumes < 1/2 spikelet length; lemma keel winged; rachilla not produced.
Perennial, stoloniferous, up to 300 mm tall. Leaf blades 30-60 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Spikelets 2.5-3.0 mm long, narrowly ovate; glumes less than half the spikelet length; lemma keel winged; rhachilla not produced.
Stoloniferous perennial to 30 cm. Leaves linear. Spikelets secund in digitate spikes, 2.5-3 mm long, lemma keel winged, glumes mostly to half as long as spikelet.
