Characteristics

Evergreen tree 4.5–18 m. high, with bushy crown, buttressed base to trunk, and smooth grey bark; young branchlets shortly pubescent to puberulous.. Leaves: stipules not seen; petiole 1–3 mm. long, puberulous; rhachis 0.8–3(–4) cm. long, conspicuously channelled above; leaflets normally 6–8 (although occasional reduced leaves with only 4 may be present also), elliptic to obovate-elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 0.9–3.2(–4.2) cm. long, 0.4–1.2(–2.5) cm. wide, rounded to obtuse or sometimes slightly emarginate at apex, not gradually tapering, glabrous or almost so.. Panicles mostly terminal, 2–14 cm. long; pedicels 1.5–10(–12, fide Léonard) mm. long, pubescent like the panicle-axes, jointed below the flower.. Flowers sweetly scented.. Sepals 4, green, 2–3 mm. long.. Petals 5, white, 3.5–4.5 mm. long.. Pods smooth, 4–6 cm. long, 2.6–3.3 cm. wide, apiculate.. Fig. 19.
