Terrestrial or rarely epiphytic herb 15–50 cm. high.. Root-tubers ellipsoid, up to 2.5 cm. long and 1 cm. in diameter, ± woolly.. Stem slender, erect, glandular hairy, especially in upper part, with 1 or 2 sheaths and a single leaf (rarely 2 leaves) at the base and several lanceolate acuminate sheaths above.. Leaf erect or spreading, lanceolate, elliptical-lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute or acuminate, 4–20 cm. long, 1–4 cm. broad, glabrous.. Inflorescence laxly or rather densely 4–22-flowered, 3–10 cm. long; rhachis glandular hairy.. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, shorter than the ovary, glandular ciliate.. Flowers pinkish-purple or mauve, suberect; pedicel with ovary 1–2 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal very convex, ovate, hooded at the apex, 5–7 mm. long; laterals spreading, obliquely ovate or lanceolate-ovate, obtuse, 6.5–8 mm. long; all ± sparsely glandular hairy outside.. Petals obliquely lanceolate, acute, 4.5–7.5 mm. long, adnate at the inner base to the column.. Lip ovate or broadly lanceolate in outline, ± distinctly 3-lobed at the middle, 5–8.5 mm. long, 2.5–5 mm. broad, the middle lobe ± triangular and much larger and longer than the side lobes.. Spur descending, cylindrical, 6–9 mm. long.. Column short and stout; anther-canals short; rostellum projecting forward, almost equally 3-lobed; stigmas shortly clavate.. Ovary glandular hairy.

Gynostemium short; stigmatic processes short, sessile at the base of the rostellum; rostellum 4 mm tall, 3-lobed.
Basal leaf usually 1, sometimes 2, dark olive-green above, purple below, 5–20 × 2–5 cm, elliptic, acute, narrowing to a petiole up to 4.5 cm long; peduncle leaves usually 3, sheath-like, 2–2.5 cm long.
Inflorescence 3.5–12 cm long, several flowered; rhachis glandular-hairy; bracts 7–12 mm long, lanceolate, acute; pedicel 2–5 mm long; ovary 8–11 mm, semi-erect, glandular-hairy.
Lip 7–10 × 5–7 mm, 3-lobed at about the middle, the mid-lobe larger than the side lobes. All lobes triangular, obtuse; mid-lobe c. 3 mm long, side lobes 1–1.5 mm long.
