Characteristics

Loosely tufted annual, 40-180 mm high; culm slender, simple. Leaf blade 10-50 x 2-3 mm. Inflorescence ovate, often appearing wedge-shaped. Fertile spikelet awns usually purple, glumes and lemmas dissimilar; glume (including awn) 4-7 mm long; lemma 2.8-4.0 mm long, back rounded, awn straight; anther 0.4-0.8(1.0) mm long. Sterile spikelet up to 16 mm long; glumes and lemmas produced into awns; awns 15-20 mm long, base purple and pale above; awns of glumes and lemmas of different lengths with the lower usually much longer than spikelet and other awns, making the spikelet not to appear regular and neat on the sides.
More
Annual, up to 200 mm tall. Leaves linear, flat, rough above; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence a congested, 1-sided, obtriangular, softly bristly panicle, spikelets sexually dimorphic, fertile spikelets concealed by sterile ones. Sterile spikelets consist of awned glumes and lemmas, awns up to 18 mm long. Fertile spikelets up to 20 mm long, 1-flowered; glumes as long as the spikelet (excluding awns); lemma 3.5-4.5 mm long, awn up to 18 mm long, not basally twisted.
Like C. echinatus but awns purple below, fertile spikelets 1-flowered, anthers 0.4-0.6 mm long.
