Flowers: umbel with bracts similar to leaves, overtopping umbel; spikelets 4-12 together, clustered in subglobose heads, abscising as entire units, except for basal sterile glumes; glumes few per spikelet; fertile ones mucronate, winged on keels, yellowish brown; Feb.-May.
