Characteristics

A fairly robust perennial with about 10-15 mm thick bulbs and slender stolons. Culm 25-50 cm long and 0.8-3.0 mm thick, triangular. Leaves many at the base; the largest 15-25 cm long and 3-8 mm wide. Inflorescence a 2.5-7.0 cm long and 2-10 cm wide anthela, consisting of one sessile and 2-6 stalked spikes, only rarely with additional secondary spikes. Inflorescence-bracts 3-4, leafy, the largest 8-15 cm long. Spikes 1.5-3.0 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, consisting of 5-20 spreading spikelets. Spikelets 5-20 mm long and 1.0-1.5 mm wide, linear-lanceolate. Glumes 3.5-4.5 mm long, ovate, reddish brown with prominent lateral nerves; apex rounded. Nutlet 1.9-2.1 mm long and 0.8-1.0 mm wide, elliptic, brown.
