Characteristics

Plants coarse and stout, with very short or no rhizomes, often forming dense clumps, the culms as much as 1 m. high; leaves 5-12 mm. wide, thick, glaucous, usually transverse-lineolate; bracts long and leaf-like; spikes in a compound in-florescence, short and very dense, the reddish-brown spikelets 4-6 mm. long; scales coriaceous, obtuse, striate, closely appressed; achene narrowly obovate, 1.5 mm. long, sharply trigonous (the axial face usually concave), dark brown, with a lightly papillose surface.
