Characteristics

Stems 30-175 cm by 2-4 mm. Leaves practically all reduced to membranous sheaths, only the upper 1-2 very shortly laminate. Inflorescence very dense, (6-)10-12(-16) by 6-8(-10) mm. Spikelets oblong-elliptic, 3-4½ by 1 mm. Glumes ovate-lanceolate, the third 2½-3½ mm long, the fourth 3½-4 mm, both with distinct ferrugineous nerves and smooth or sparsely spinulose keel. Nut oblong or elliptic-oblong, black, 1½-2 by 3/5-¾ mm.
