Characteristics

Closely allied to C. elatus. Usually more robust. Leaves often broader, up to 18 mm wide. Cladoprophylls with smooth keel. Spikes very dense (usually c. 70 spikelets to the spike), 6-8 mm (ultimately up to 10 mm) wide. Spikelets somewhat broader, c. 1½ mm wide, obliquely patent. Wings of the rachilla lanceolate, 1/5 mm wide. Glumes ovate to elliptic, (1¼-)1¾-2 by 1-1¼ mm. Anthers with a large, setulose appendage of the connective about half as long as the anther-cells. Nut oblong-ellipsoid, c. 1.2 by 2/5 mm.
