Perennial herb, up to 0.25 mm high, with woody rhizome, without stolons. Leaf blades developed; old leaf sheaths brown and quite hard. Flowers: spikelets digitate; style undivided or divided into 2 or 3 short stigmas; glumes and nutlets abscising individually leaving a persistent rachilla; glumes many per spikelet, > 2 mm long, reddish brown to purplish black; Oct.-Mar.
Sparsely tufted, low perennial, 8-25 cm. Spikelets reddish brown.
