Characteristics

Perennial herb, 0.2-0.9 m high, ± long-rhizomatous. Leaf blades absent to well developed, ± 3 mm wide, flat. Culm scapose, 3-angled, 1.0-2.5 mm in diam. Inflorescence frequently pseudo-viviparous, a compound umbel, 25-150 mm in diam., spikelets in digitate clusters of 3-7. Subtending bracts 3-5, leaf-like. Spikelets much compressed, ovate to oblong, 4-12 x 2-3 mm, 16-30-flowered. Glumes not imbricate. Flowering time Sept.-June. Nutlet obtriangular to ± circular, ± 0.7 mm long, obscurely 3-angled, brown, surface ± smooth when mature (at a younger stage surface appears muriculate and walls of lengthwise-elongated cells are visible under 10x magnification.
