Perennial herb, up to 0.65 m high; densely tufted, without stolons. Leaves many, stiff, in a rosette at culm base with many, persistent, dead leaves. Flowers: inflorescence of 1 sessile spikelet-cluster and 3-12 stalked, head-like clusters; spikelets digitate; glumes and nutlets abscising individually leaving a persistent rachilla; glumes many per spikelet, with a midrib and one clearly defined longitudinal vein on each flank, brownish black; Oct.-Jan.
