Characteristics

Climber to 6(?–12) m.; stems striate, densely ferruginous pubescent with curled hairs when young later more sparsely so and with sparse to very dense short gland-tipped hairs ± 0.5 mm. long; tendrils present.. Leaves 5-foliolate; leaflets obovate to elliptic or obovate-oblong, 2.5–12 cm. long, 1.5–5.2 cm. wide, acute at the apex, broadly acuminate to rounded at the base, crenate, the crenae ending in asymmetric ± acute glandular points, with sparse hairs above or dense on midrib or glabrescent, thinly whitish ferruginous velvety beneath with venation darker; petioles 4–7.5 cm. long; petiolules 0.4–1 cm. long; stipules ovate, 4 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, acute, velvety outside.. Cymes 7.5–25 cm. wide; peduncle 4–7 cm. long and pedicels 1.5–2 mm. long, both with similar indumentum to stems; bracts and bracteoles up to 1 mm. long.. Buds narrow, cylindrical, 3.5–4 mm. long, swollen at base and apex, ferruginous pubescent and with gland-tipped hairs mainly on sides, not tufted at apex.. Calyx 1.2 mm. wide.. Petals white or green.. Fruit purple, broadly ellipsoid-globose, 9 mm. long (up to 1/2 inch fresh?), 7.5 mm. wide, pubescent and with dense short gland-tipped hairs under 0.5 mm. long.. Seeds discoid-subglobose, 6 mm. in diameter, ± 5 mm. thick; ventral ridge with median raised umbo from which radiate 3 transverse ridges across the sides; dorsal mid-ridge ± sinuous, obscurely tuberculate; lateral ridges mere slightly tuberculate angles and between them and midrib 1–2 short lateral ridge-tubercles.
