Species

Angiosperms > Vitales > Vitaceae > Cyphostemma

Characteristics

Climber to 3.5 m. or creeping; stems striate, glabrous or finely setulose and with a few gland-tipped hairs near the nodes; tendrils present.. Leaves 3(–5)-foliolate; leaflets narrowly to broadly elliptic, oblong-elliptic or obovate, 2.5–11 cm. long, 0.5–5.5 cm. wide, rounded to subacute or acute and mucronate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, coarsely crenate-serrate, the divisions directed to leaf-apex, ± glandular-apiculate, rather thin, glabrous to finely pubescent on both surfaces and a few gland-tipped hairs on midrib at base; petiole (1–)3–7 cm. long, glabrous or finely pubescent or only puberulous above and usually with scattered gland-tipped hairs; petiolules (0–)2–6(–10) mm. long the median the longest, usually with rather denser gland-tipped hairs or tubercles; stipules lanceolate to ovate, 6–7 mm. long, 2–4 mm. wide, acute or acuminate, glabrous.. Cymes axillary, 6–8 cm. wide; peduncles 2–6 cm. long, sometimes appearing longer when cyme apparently terminates a leafless branch but there are stipules at the junction, glabrous to pubescent with fine hairs and scattered gland-tipped hairs; pedicels 4–7 mm. long, with prominent gland-tipped hairs or sessile glands in middle portion but otherwise glabrous; bracts and bracteoles lanceolate, 1–2.5 mm. long.. Buds oblong, 2–2.5 mm. long, slightly constricted near the middle, glabrous.. Calyx red, 1 mm. wide, ± entire, usually with sessile glands at base.. Petals deep red or at least tipped with red.. Fruits red, ellipsoid-globose, 4–8 mm. long, 4–7 mm. wide, glabrous.. Seeds pale, obovoid-globose, up to ± 6 mm. long, 4 mm. wide; ventral ridge evident, rather wide; mid-dorsal ridge evident at least for apical 3/4 but laterals rather obscure, with several ± obscure to evident tubercles between; sides with 3–4 transverse ridges which reach the dorsal laterals; surface as a whole ± minutely tuberculate (but not in type of C. amplexum).
