Characteristics

Stem erect, succulent, 1.8–2.5 m. tall, ± 30 cm. in diameter at the base (but possibly not developed in some plants, see note); bark grey, covered with scars of fallen branchlets.. Branches few, at the apex, scandent, growing rapidly and twice deciduous annually, pubescent and densely covered with red ± viscid glandular hairs ± 0.3 mm. long; tendrils ± 20 cm. long.. Leaves 3(–4)-foliate; leaflets ovate, elliptic or slightly obovate, 2.8–11.5 cm. long, 1.8–9 cm. wide, acute to obtuse at the apex, cuneate to ± rounded at the base, the laterals ± oblique, slightly succulent, glabrous or puberulous above, glabrescent or more often pubescent with short crisped hairs beneath to thinly white velvety and sometimes a very few ± sessile orange glands, crenate-dentate; petiole 2–6 cm. long, rachis 0.3–2 cm. long; stipules oblong-falcate, 7 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide.. Inflorescences many-flowered, up to 12 cm. long and 20 cm. wide, the ultimate cymules ± 6-flowered; axes pubescent and densely covered with glandular hairs; peduncle 3–9.5 cm. long; secondary axes 1.5–4 cm. long; pedicels 1.5–7 mm. long.. Buds yellow-green, subcylindrical, 3.2 mm. long, slightly attenuate at the middle, thickened and 4-lobed at the apex, densely covered with glandular hairs.. Calyx 0.8 mm. long, 2 mm. wide.. Petals yellow-green with crimson apex, narrowly oblong, 4.2 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide.. Fruit ellipsoid, 8 mm. long, 5 mm. wide, densely covered with red glandular hairs 0.5–1 mm. long.. Seeds straw-coloured, oblong-ellipsoid, 6.5–7 mm. long, 4 mm. wide; ventral ridge evident, thickened for basal 2/3, with 4 broad radiating lateral side ridges; dorsal ridges rather obscure, the laterals somewhat irregular and joined to side ridges and with ± 6 ± obscure ridge-like tubercles between each lateral and central dorsal.
