Climbing herb or scrambler to 3 m.; stems often red, sparsely pubescent or glabrescent; tendrils present.. Leaves digitately 3-foliolate; leaflets elliptic or rhombic-to ovate-elliptic, the laterals asymmetric at base, 3–11 cm. long, 1.2–3.5(–6) cm. wide, acute and mucronate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, crenate with each lobe mucronate, membranous, glabrous except for pubescence on venation above; petiole 2.5–6 cm. long; terminal petiolules up to 8 mm. long, the laterals ± 2 mm. long or in East African material all ± absent; stipules leafy, clasping, ± round, l–2.5(–3) cm. in diameter, obtuse at the apex, slightly cordate at the base, coarsely crenate or toothed, the lobes ± mucronate.. Inflorescence branched, 4–7 cm. wide, the individual cymes 4–8-flowered; peduncles 3–9 cm. long, pubescent; axes usually crimson; pedicels 2–4 mm. long; bracts and bracteoles ± lanceolate, 1–2 mm. long.. Calyx 0.5 mm. long, subentire, pubescent and densely glandular.. Flower-buds green, tipped red, or red or ? yellow and brown, oblong-cylindric, constricted near the middle, glabrous..
