Characteristics

Herbaceous climber to 3 m.; stems glabrous or with very few subsessile glands; tendrils reddish or purple.. Leaves 5-foliolate; leaflets elliptic-lanceolate, 4.5–9.5 cm. long, 2–2.8 cm. wide, long tapering to a very narrowly acute apex, cuneate at the base, rather distinctly serrate, ± entirely glabrous except for very minute hairs on midrib above and marginal ciliae densely pellucid-punctate; petiole 1.8–3.5 cm. long; petiolules 0.5–1.8 cm. long, the median one twice as long as others; stipules falcate, 5–8 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, ciliate.. Inflorescences ± 8 cm. wide; peduncle reddish, 1–2.5 cm. long; pedicels 4–7 mm. long; bracts and bracteoles minute, all axes pubescent but not glandular.. Buds urceolate, ± 2 mm. long, strongly constricted above the middle, apically with 1-several stalked glands per petal, mainly at outer edge.. Calyx 0.8 mm. wide, pubescent and often with sessile glands.. Petals purple.. Fruits subglobose, 6–7 mm. in diameter, glabrous.. Seeds pinkish brown, 5.5 mm. long, 4.3 mm. wide; ventral ridge ± evident and broad, ending in very distinct basal projection; mid-dorsal ridge strongly evident only in middle, the laterals ± evident and with 3–5 marked tubercles between them and mid-ridge; sides with ± 5 radiating transverse ridges which join the lateral dorsals; the whole surface with small irregular tubercles.
