Characteristics

Shrub, 2–4 m. tall, sometimes with the larger branches curved; bark grey or brownish, striate, ultimately flaking off in small pieces.. Branches of previous season’s growth mostly relatively short, spreading, tapered but scarcely spine-tipped, sometimes several per node, rather densely puberulous, glabrescent; flowering branchlets very short, cushion-shaped with tufts of leaves.. Leaves 2–3.5 cm. long; stipules small, fugaceous; lateral leaflets 6–8(–12) on either side of rhachis, oblong, up to 4–11 mm. long, 1.5–5 mm. wide, rounded at both ends, pubescent; lateral nerves few, rather spreading, inconspicuous.. Racemes or little-developed panicles arising with tufts of new leaves on short branchlets, 1.5–5 cm. long; axes slender, spreading, pubescent at least on rhachis; bracts linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, 1–2 mm. long, caducous; bracteoles at top of 1–2 mm. long pedicel, similar.. Calyx 4–4.5 mm. long, thinly pubescent.. Corolla 7–8 mm. long, white; standard suborbicular with well-developed claw, hairy inside near base of blade; wings practically as long as standard and slightly exceeding keel.. Stamens 9, united.. Fruit elliptic-oblong, bluntly pointed to rounded at apex, narrowed to the 0.5 cm. long stipe, 2–3 cm. long, 0.8–1.3 cm. wide, papery, brown, glabrous, narrowly winged along upper side (peripheral nerve submarginal) and with inconspicuous venation, 1-seeded.
