Characteristics

Tufted perennial 600-1 800 mm high; rhizome swollen; culm brittle, woody, often branched, with a waxy bloom below the node, nodes occasionally hairy. Leaf blade 100-250 x 4-12 mm Inflorescence straw coloured; spikelets borne singly or in pairs; pedicels unequal. Spikelet 5-9 mm long, light to senna brown; lower glume 4-5 mm long; upper glume and lower lemma 3-nerved; upper lemma with 6 tufts of white hairs, (3 tufts on either side of central nerve), loosely hairy below tufts, 5-nerved, lobes 1.0-1.5 mm long, acute, central awn 7-12 mm long; anther 1.5-2.0 mm long.

Spikelets 5-9 mm long, spikelets light or sienna brown; upper glume and lower lemma 3-nerved; lower lemma with 3 tufts of white hairs on either side above middle, lobes acute and 1.0-1.5 mm long, awns 7-12 mm long.
Superior lemma 5-nerved, pilose and with a row of 6 tufts across the back, setaceously bilobed (setae up to 1 mm. long), with an awn 6–12 mm. long.
Inferior glume 1/2–3/4 length of spikelet, acute to setaceously acuminate.
Leaf laminae 4–12 mm. wide, flat, glaucous, the margins not crinkly.
Palea keels narrowly winged, papillose between keels.
Perennial with swollen rootstock.
Culms 60–150 cm. high, woody.
Inferior lemma 3(5)-nerved.
