Characteristics

Shrub or tree, glabrous, up to 10 m. tall; bark thin, dark red-brown.. Branchlets brownish-yellowish, sparsely lenticellate.. Leaf-blades oblanceolate or oblong, apex acuminate, tip bluntish, base cuneate to rounded, thin to coriaceous, regularly serrate, 10–19 cm. long, 3–7 cm. broad; nerves 6–8(–9) pairs, prominent on both faces, as is the rather dense though much finer reticulation; petiole 5–12 mm. long.. Racemes pendulous, 5–16-flowered; rhachis slender, glabrous, 6–15(–18) cm. long, no flowers in the lower 1/3 1/2 pedicels slender, 5–10(–15) mm. long at anthesis.. Sepals 10–12, white to pinkish, the outer 3–5 elliptic and 6–7 mm. long, 5–6 mm. broad, the inner ones elliptic-ovate to-obovate, ± 7 mm. long and 2.5–5 mm. broad, their pubescent scale ± 2 mm. long.. Stamens 25–30; filaments ± 5 mm. long; anthers 3 mm. long.. Ovary shortly tomentose to almost woolly; style ± 1 mm. long, with 3 or 4 very short stigmatic branches.. Fruit subglobular, 1.5–1.8 cm. across, densely pubescent, finally purple-red; pericarp 0.5–1 mm. thick.. Seeds ± 3, ± 8 mm. long, 7 mm. broad.
