Erectum glabrum, ca. 20 cm. altum; radix tuberosa, tuber magnum, ad 20 cm. longum; rami rigidi, saepe virgati, in cultis intdrdum subdecumbentes, 2-angulati, augulis inter nodos alternantibus, ad 3 mm. diam., internodiis 1-2 cm. longis, foliis brevioribus; folia parum supra basin disarticulata, reliquis submembranaceis, vix induratis, denium gemmiferis, erecta irnbricata, acute earinata, acuminata, supra plana, lateribus leviter convexis, pallide glauco-viridia, levia, ad 3.5 cm. longa, saepius ad 5 mm. lata diametroquc; (lores 2-ternati diurni, 2 cm. diam., cyma densa; pedunculi ad 8 mm. longi; receptaculum breviter crateriforme; sepala 5, valde inaequilonga, 2 ad 1 cm., 3 ad 6 mm., longa: petala 3-seriata, rubro-cuprea ad 9 mm. longa, 1 mm. lata; staminodia pallida, stamina parum excedentia; filainenta alba interiora circa medium papillata. autlieris stramineis; glandulae 5, conspicuae; ovarium supra valde elevatum, 5 lobatum; stigmata subulata acuminata, 2 mm. longa; capsula generis.

Perennial, dwarf shrublet, up to 0.2 m high, with upright to decumbent stems, roots thickened, fibrous, up to 200 mm long. Leaves succulent, semi-terete, imbricate, pale green, apex acuminate. Flowers solitary or 2 per node, deep red to copper. Flowering time spring to late summer. Capsules 5-locular with high valve rims, closing bodies absent, covering membranes reduced to a ledge, expanding keels as broad as valve wings.
