Characteristics

Root: one somewhat woody taproot to 12 cm long, to 15 mm 0. Hypocotyl: cluster of stems from root apex. Growth form: erect branches, fasciculate, with basal vegetative branches. Stems: to 9 cm tall. Leaves: 10-40 mm long, 2.4 mm broad, 2-4 mm thick, linear tip of leaf. Tip of leaf: straight, acuminate. Upper leaf surface: weakly channelled in habitat. Bladder cells: semiglobose, smooth or with a small central dome on each cell. Inflorescence: in cymes raised well above the plant, lasting into the next season as dried skeletons. Pedicels: 8-20 mm. Calyx lobes: unequal: 4.5 mm and 3 mm long. Diameter of flower: 10-23 mm in habitat. Petal color/shape: deep purple. Petal numbers or series: 20-25, 1(-2) series, not overlapping laterally, no inner shorter petals. Petal size: 7-8 mm long, 1.2 mm broad. Filamentous staminodes. 16-22. Stamens: ca 45. Fruit diameter: 4-5.5 mm. Capsule proper: cyme dying back after one season, the capsule proper falling off its base before. Capsule top: flat, later sunken in the center.
