Characteristics

Liana, scrambling vine or scandent shrub. Shoots and branchlets sparsely appressed-puberulous, the hairs copper-coloured or white. Leaves: petiole 3–6 mm long, with appressed hairs; lamina elliptic to narrowly elliptic, oblong to narrowly oblong, oblong-elliptic, lanceolate or narrowly obovate to oblanceolate, (2.5–) 3–10.5 cm long, 1–3 cm wide, acute to obtuse, cuneate or appearing shortly truncate with 2 minute lobes either side of midrib at base, acute to obtuse or rounded to somewhat emarginate at apex, glabrous above, slightly glaucous and sparsely pubescent below; secondary veins 13–18 pairs. Flowers c. 5 cm diam. Pedicel 1.2–2.5 cm long, puberulous; bract lanceolate, 4–18 mm long, 1.8–4 mm wide. Sepals 3, broadly ovate, 7–14 mm long, 6–10 mm wide, acute, glabrescent. Petals 3 + 3 in 2 whorls (6 in 2 whorls of 3), sparsely puberulous, yellowish green or yellow-orange (sometimes with red markings on inner surface, fide Cooper & Cooper 2004: 21); outer petals ovate, 23–35 mm long, 14–22 mm wide, inner petals obspathulate, 12–20 mm long, 6–8 mm wide, concave at base, recurved at margins. Stamens c. 120, c. 1.5–1.7 mm long. Carpels c. (15–) 30–35; ovary 1.7 mm long. Apocarps many per cluster, c. 1–5 cm long, c. 4.5–7 mm wide, constricted between each seed (often moniliform), yellow to red to black (mature to purple and red-black); stipe 8–20 mm long. Seeds 1–5, subglobular or broadly ellipsoidal, 6–8 mm long, 4.9–6 mm wide.
