Characteristics

Small tree or shrub 4–9 m tall, sometimes semiscandent to 6 m (fide Eggeling ), the trunk sometimes forked at the base; branches reddish or ferruginous tomentose or pubescent.. Leaves reddish when young, oblong-oblanceolate to oblong-elliptic, 9–40 cm long, 3.5–19 cm wide, acute or acuminate at the apex, asymmetrically cordate at the base, irregularly coarsely toothed, red-brown pubescent above and more densely and roughly so beneath; petioles rusty velvety, 1–2.5 cm long.. Inflorescence with axillary fascicles of peduncles each of which bears a branched head of 3–6 sessile or shortly pedicellate flowers or sessile clusters in lower axils; peduncle up to ± 1.2 cm long; 3 round bracts up to ± 5 mm diameter, forming an involucre; all bracts long-persistent; bracts, pedicels and perianth lobes pale yellow-green, silky tomentose.. Flowers white or greenish, subsessile; sepals oblong, 1–1.7 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, silky hairy outside, tomentose inside; petals ovate-oblong or elliptic, 4 mm long, 1.5 mm wide; staminal tube with a ring of hairs; ovary 5–7-locular, hairy; stigma finely fimbriate.. Fruits ellipsoid to subglobose, 8–10 cm long, 8–9 cm wide, ridged, at first with pink-mauve hairs, soon ± glabrous.. Seeds obovoid, 1 cm long, 5 mm wide.
