Characteristics

Trees or shrubs or sometimes ± scandent, with stellate indumentum. Leaves alternate, toothed; stipules divided into 2–6 subulate divisions, ± persistent. Flowers hermaphrodite, in axillary or terminal sessile or pedunculate many-flowered cymes, the individual elements umbelliform, pedicellate or subsessile; an involucre of stipule-like bracts around the groups of buds, often deciduous. Sepals 5, free, sometimes fimbriate at the apex.. Petals 5, shorter than the sepals, with a glandular area at the base inside. Stamens numerous, joined at the base to form a glabrous or pubescent tube; anthers subglobose, dorsifixed, dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary 5–10-locular; style cylindrical with fimbriate stigma; ovules numerous, anatropous, in two rows in each locule. Fruits ellipsoid, indehiscent with fibrous or woody wall, ± ridged, 5–10-locular. Seeds ovate in outline, compressed, winged at rounded and acute ends, coarsely hairy.
