Characteristics

Tree 9–18 m tall; branches stellate-tomentellous and with scattered simple hairs.. Leaves oblong, 10–21 cm long, 2.8–8 cm wide, acute to acuminate at the apex, rounded to asymmetrically subcordate at the base, toothed, ± subcoriaceous, finely puberulous or ± glabrous above, stellate-puberulous beneath and with longer hairs on the nerves; domatia absent; stipules 3–4-lobed, 5–10 mm long, the lobes lanceolate, tomentellous and with scattered longer hairs, deciduous; petiole 0.8–1.2 cm long with similar indumentum.. Cymes axillary and terminal, 4–8-flowered; peduncle up to 4 cm long with indumentum of the stipules; involucral bracts 6–8, 3 ovate-elliptic, 3 mm long, 2 mm wide and 3–5 oblong-lanceolate, not enveloping the buds; pedicels 1–2 cm long with similar indumentum to the stipules.. Sepals cream-yellow, fleshy but brittle, 1–1.5 cm long, 2–4 mm wide, according to literature not fringed, tomentose and with some longer hairs outside.. Petals lanceolate to obovate-oblong, 4–4.5 mm long, 1(–3) mm wide (see note).. Staminal tube with ring of hairs at apex; anthers golden-yellow.. Ovary 5–7-locular, tomentose; stigma finely fringed.. Fruit oblong-globose, ± 6.5–9 cm long, 5–7.5 cm wide, turning rusty brown within a few seconds when cut.. Seeds obovate in outline 1.7 cm long, 1 cm wide, compressed, coarsely hairy, distinctly winged at broad end.
