Tree up to 7–5 m. high, flowering before the leaves; bark corky; branches 4-angled, internodes of young branches densely strigose; nodes swollen, long-setose.. Leaf-lamina ovate or broadly elliptic, 6–13 cm. long, 3.5–7.5 cm. wide, apex acute, base rounded or ± cuneate, strigose on both surfaces; midrib and the 2 pairs of basal longitudinal nerves impressed above, subprominent beneath.. Inflorescence a lax terminal panicle, ± 20-flowered; panicle-axis sparsely setose below, glabrous towards the apex; pedicels 4–6 mm. long, glabrous.. Calyx-tube campanulate, 7–8 mm. long, 5–6 mm. in diameter, glabrous; lobes ovate, 3 mm. long, glabrous except for the ciliate margins.. Petals oblong-obovate or ovate, 22 mm. long, 12–14 mm. wide, purple.. Anthers 11–12 mm. long; free part of connective curved, 12–14 mm. long; anterior appendages 5 mm. long; filament 10 mm. long..
