Characteristics

Culms erect, 20–80 (–150) cm long. Leaves: ligule 1–1.5 mm long, ciliolate; blade 5–26 cm long, 0.9–7 mm wide. Inflorescence contracted, linear, 9–26.5 cm long, 1–5 cm wide. Spikelets lanceolate, 7–9 mm long, without rachilla extension. Callus 0.2–0.2 mm long, pilose; hairs 1–1.5 mm long. Glumes subequal, hyaline, ± equal to lemma; lower glume 6–8 mm long, muticous or aristate or setiform; upper glume 6–8.5 mm long, shortly setiform. Lemma linear, 6–9 mm long, with lobes to 3 mm long; awn arising 1.3–2.6 mm below apex, 10–26 mm long overall, geniculate (usually near base as well as at junction with bristle), with column strongly twisted. Palea 4.5–6.5 mm long. Anthers 2 or 3, 1–2.8 mm long. Caryopsis 3.2–4.5 mm long.
