Characteristics

Lianas with curled tendrils; white, sticky latex present in all parts; branches with conspicuous transverse leaf scars, lenticellate, virgate-sarmentose. Leaves opposite, exstipulate. Inflorescence a loose, elongate, terminal panicle of cymes; pedunculate, often tendril-like. Corolla glabrous outside, inside pilose at the widest part of the almost cylindrical tube; corolla lobes overlapping to the left, long-ciliate along the margin that is covered in bud. Stamens inserted at the widened part of the tube; anthers cordate at the base, glabrous. Ovary of two united carpels, disk absent; pistil head composed of an oblong stigmatic basal part and a cleft stigmoid apex. Fruit a red, orange or yellow berry; pulp yellow. Seeds brown; cotyledons flat, undulate.
