Characteristics

Epiphytic herbs. Leaves sessile or subsessile, alternate, anisophyllous, pre-sumably distichous, the lateral veins evanescent; stipules small, dimorphic, sub-ulate or linear lanceolate, apparently not occupying a fixed position with relation to the petiole attachment. Inflorescences terminal, pedunculate, the latter ter-minated by 2 large subrotund bracts enclosing 2 or more flowers. Flowers with the calycine lobes 5, subulate, erect; corolla funnelform, pubescent at the base within near the filament attachment point, the lobes themselves lobed basally; stamens 5, unequal, the anthers ovate or oblong, apiculate, the filaments attached near the base of the tube; ovary 2-celled, the placentas with numerous ovules, arising from the base of the septum. Frui ts capsular, laterally compressed, 2-celled, dehiscing at the apex, the placentas attached basally to the septum, seeds numerous, minute, hairy, the hairs tufted at 1 point on the seed.
