Characteristics

Plants in clumps of few-many stems.. Corms 1-2(-2.5) cm. in diameter.. Leaves several, the basal 20-85 cm. long, 3.5-7(-11) mm. wide, cauline sheathing leaves 5.. Stems 30-135 cm. long, 2-4-branched.. Spikes pendulous, the terminal 2-6(-7)-flowered, lateral spikes 2-4(-5)-flowered, flowers usually laxly arranged (bracts usually less then 2 internodes long, or longer when apical acumen very well developed); bracts oblong to obovate, 1.4-2.6(-3.2) cm. long, acute to shortly acuminate, often ± solidly coloured dark brown, lighter but heavily flecked on shoulders, or sometimes lighter in tone but heavily flecked; veins 5-6 each side of midvein, up to 0.3 mm. apart, but intermediates often strongly developed, fading out in upper third of bract.. Flowers pale lilac to purple or reddish, 1.8-3 cm. long; tube 4-10 mm. long; tepals 12.5-25(-40) × 4.5-11 mm.. Anthers 4.5-9 mm. long.. Stigmas reaching to 3-13(-25) mm. below tepal-apices.. Ovary ovoid, ± 4 mm. long; style reaching to the anther-apices or shortly beyond them, and 3-4 mm. short of the tepal-apices.. Capsules globose, 6-8 mm. long.
